About Portable Sports Coach

Why Portable Sports Coach Was Created

Portable Sports Coach was created from years of hands-on coaching experience across grassroots football, schools, youth development programmes, academy environments, and disability sport.

Throughout that journey, I had the opportunity to work with players of all ages and abilities, from children taking their first steps in the game through to older youth players competing in more structured development environments.

Along the way, I worked in a variety of coaching settings, including community football programmes, schools, youth clubs, academy-linked environments, and specialist sports programmes. Each presented different challenges, but the same fundamental goal remained: helping players learn, improve, and enjoy the game.

One of the biggest lessons I learned was that great coaching is rarely about finding the perfect drill. It’s about understanding how players learn, creating the right environment, and selecting activities that develop both technical ability and decision-making.

Over time, I found myself constantly collecting, adapting, and refining training sessions to meet the needs of different players, age groups, and coaching environments. Portable Sports Coach was created to bring those ideas together into a practical resource that coaches can use to plan better sessions and spend more time developing players.

What Years Of Coaching Taught Us

Working with players across different age groups and coaching environments quickly teaches you that no two sessions are ever the same.

A practice that works perfectly with one group may need to be completely adapted for another. Younger players often need activities that maximise touches, movement, and enjoyment, while older players benefit from greater tactical complexity and decision-making challenges.

Across schools, grassroots football, development programmes, academy environments, and inclusive sport initiatives, one lesson remained consistent: players learn best when they are actively involved and challenged to think for themselves.

That’s why the resources throughout Portable Sports Coach focus on practical coaching solutions rather than rigid session plans. Every drill can be adapted to suit different ages, abilities, squad sizes, and coaching objectives.

Our goal is not simply to provide drills, but to help coaches understand how to use them effectively within their own environment.

Who Is Portable Sports Coach For?

One of the unique challenges of coaching is that every environment has different demands.

Over the years, we’ve worked with complete beginners taking their first steps in the game, players progressing through structured development pathways, and coaches operating in schools, clubs, community programmes, and inclusive sport settings.

As a result, Portable Sports Coach has been built for:

  • Grassroots football coaches
  • Youth team coaches
  • School sports teachers
  • Volunteer coaches
  • Parents running training sessions
  • Club coaches and player development staff

Whether you’re coaching a group of six-year-olds for the first time or planning sessions for more advanced players, the focus remains the same: helping players improve while enjoying the game.
